Burlington's Intervale is full of wonderful community farms. I visited my friend and manager of the Intervale Community Farm, Andy Jones, to check on the season's growth so far. I found Andy patching up one of the farm trucks with a riveter and we chatted about the warm weather and early season. Then I photographed Becky Maden in one of the hoophouses where the seedlings are off to a great start. Becky demonstrated how they are grafting seedling tomatoes onto roots with heartier stock - a very delicate operation. They hope this will help avert a recurrence of the late blight which hit last summer and decimated the tomato harvest throughout Vermont.
Below is an infrared shot of a Stray Cat Flower Farm hoophouse awaiting the start of the season.
